The Grip We Can't Let Go Of
There's something we don't talk about enough in our quiet moments: the exhausting, invisible weight of trying to control everything.
Not the big, obvious things. We know we can't control the weather or the economy or other people's choices. No, I'm talking about the subtler grip. The way we rehearse conversations before they happen. The way we plan for every possible outcome so we're never caught off guard. The way we stay busy is not because we love the hustle, but because stillness feels dangerous.
Control whispers to us that it's keeping us safe. And for a while, we believe it.
But here's what I've come to understand: control isn't protection. It's a cage we build around ourselves and call it wisdom.
When we grip tightly to outcomes, we squeeze the joy right out of the journey. When we insist on knowing every next step, we miss the unexpected doors that open on the sides of the road we refused to travel. When we try to manage how people see us, love us, and treat us, we lose the freedom of simply being ourselves.
Control holds us back because it is rooted in fear. Fear that if we let go, things will fall apart. Fear that we are not enough without our careful management of life. Fear that God, or the universe, or fate cannot be trusted with the details of our days.
But what if trust is the very thing that sets us free?
What if the life we've been longing for is waiting on the other side of the grip we refuse to release?
I don't think letting go means being passive. It means being present. It means doing your part and then breathing, really breathing, and allowing what is meant to unfold to unfold.
This Sunday, I want to invite you to notice where you're holding on the tightest. That tension in your chest, that racing mind at 2am, that need to have the last word—that's the map. That's where the work is. And the work isn't more control. It's the quiet, courageous act of surrender.
What is one thing you've been trying to control that you could release this week?
