Finding Clarity When Everything Feels Cloudy
Some kinds of tiredness don’t take a nap to fix. Not the tiredness of doing too much, but the fog of not knowing what to do at all. Maybe you have felt this in the recent past, in a decision you are making, a relationship, a season of life, and just…not seeing clearly. It’s not comfortable. We want answers. Now. We want the fog to clear in our timeline.
But clarity never arrives all at once. More often it comes in small moments: a quiet morning, an honest conversation, or a verse that suddenly means something different than it did last year. Clarity is less like a switch and more like a sunrise. Deadly. Steady. If you keep facing the right direction, be steady.
A few things that have helped me find clarity when I couldn't see the way forward:
1. Get quiet and get answers. It is easy to fill the void with noisy advice, research, and distraction. But clarity does not come in the busyness. It comes in stillness. Allow yourself to sit in the "I don't know yet" for a little while.
2. Ask, “What is true?” not “What feels true?” Feelings are real, but they’re not always reliable narrators. When I am foggy, I try to separate what I know is happening from what I feel is happening. And it is in that gap that clarity often begins to emerge.
3. Get it on paper. There is something about putting confusion into words, even messy, half-formed words, that starts to organize the chaos. You don’t need to know the answer to ask the question.
4. Trust clarity is a season, not a moment. Some of the clearest understanding I have ever had about my life did not come in a lightning bolt. It came slowly, months of just being faithful in the fog.
If you're in a season where things feel unclear right now, you're not behind. You're not doing it wrong. You're just in the part of the story before the clarity comes, and that part matters too.
Take a breath. Get quiet. Keep going.
The fog doesn't last forever.
